King on Mars

I just love the Brittish TV series Life on Mars so I just had to show you this:

DVDs to be released Tuesday

Stephen King praised the British police drama "Life on Mars" as "one of the greatest limited-run television series I've ever seen." And he certainly got it right when he said, in Entertainment Weekly, that it "blows the American version out of the water." Well, now the original U.K. series comes to home video, being released Tuesday in a four-disc set packed with special features (Acorn Media, $59.99).

John Simm plays a modern-day Manchester police detective who gets hit by a car while chasing a killer and wakes up in 1973. Still a cop, he tries to solve crimes using the low-tech and frequently frustrating methods of the 1970s. Police procedure is a little rougher on suspects and forensics is slower – but the music's really cool.

The set includes audio commentary on each episode, an hourlong documentary with cast and crew interviews, and behind-the-scenes footage, a "Music of 'Life on Mars' " featurette, outtakes and more.

This is "Series 1" of the show that ran for two seasons on British TV and was seen on BBC America. The U.S. version ran on ABC in the 2008-09 season.

UK proof of Under the Dome

Here is a scan of an uncorrected UK proof for Under the Dome. It contains 880 pages (although the finished book will have 896 pages due to the fact that the finished book will be a bit more spaced out then the proof) and also has an author's note at the back.

King in Manchester

From Rutland Herald.

It's not clear whether state officials will be able to organize a presidential visit in the near future, but before the end of the year Vermont will get a visit from a King.

As part of a tour supporting his forthcoming novel, "Under the Dome," author Stephen King will be in Manchester on Dec. 2 as a guest of the Northshire Bookstore.

Northshire event coordinator Linda Ellingsworth called it "the mother of all book signings."

"It's obviously thrilling. The people here said it's probably been 15 years since he's been back here," Ellingsworth said.

"It's always exciting when a writer of his stature comes through Vermont. The tough thing is going to be getting in the door (of the signing,)" Bissette said.

Given this unusual opportunity, Bissette said he hoped people who planned to attend would come up with some good questions for King.

Ellingsworth said the bookstore would probably create a separate page on its Web site to promote the event. Tickets may be available as early as the first week in August.

Interesting news from the moderator of King's official site about the signed collectors ed. of Under the Dome.

I can't confirm this with Scribner because they close down early on Fridays in the summer, but there's a rumor going around the grapevine that the signed limiteds will be going on sale through their website this weekend. You could try this link but if you don't see the signed limited showing up, use the Search function on their site.

Under the Dome movie

Posted: July 16, 2009, 22:58
_
Publishers Weekly reports that Under the Dome might be on its way to be filmed:

Quote:
Rand Holston at CAA is currently out with the film rights to Stephen King's forthcoming novel, Under the Dome. Scribner is publishing in November and Holston is co-agenting with Darhansoff, Verrill, Feldman. (King's literary agent is Chuck Verrill.) The novel follows the members of a small Maine town inexplicably sealed off one day by an invisible and impenetrable force field. Stranded inside the dome—which is erected at a random and unfortunate circumference that separates those within the town—a group of locals, led by an Iraq war vet, band together to fight rising social unrest and, ultimately, the barrier itself. King announced that he had finished the book back in January and, in his column for Entertainment Weekly, spoke of its massive size—it's more than 1,000 pages. The heft may be making it tough for Hollywood execs to see the story working as a feature; one insider said all the activity in the book is causing some to think Dome makes more sense as a miniseries. Other massive 1,000-plus page works by King—like It and The Stand—both wound up on the small screen, the former as a TV movie and the latter as a miniseries.

Collectors ed. of Under the Dome

This was just posted by the Moderator on the Stephen King Message Board:

I've been authorized to release the official information from Scribner about the collector's editions, so here you go:

Scribner will publish two Collector’s Editions. The regular Collector’s Edition will have a special jacket with a belly band, a stamped case, four-color printed endpapers, a ribbon marker, and will contain a set of 27 special trading cards featuring drawings of characters from the book (drawn by cartoonist Matthew Diffee). These drawings will also be featured in the book—as a frontispiece image and on the 26 part title pages. The book will be shrink-wrapped and Scribner will print only 25,000 copies of this edition, priced at $75.

Scribner is also offering 1,500 copies of a signed, limited Collector’s Edition. This contains all the special elements listed above, plus the book will be signed by the author. This is priced at $200.

Cell heads to TV

Posted: July 14, 2009, 21:26
_
Eli Roth has left Cell but now John Harrison has taken over and is about to turn it into a TV mini-serie. Here is what Dread Central writes about it:

"Some cool news just came out during the Q&A following the North American premiere of John Harrison's adaptation of Clive Barker's Book of Blood. According to Harrison he has just signed up to adapt Stephen King's technology spawned zombie story Cell. Following the demise of the Eli Roth adaptation, Harrison was approached to do a TV mini-series version.

And here is what Fangoria has to say about it:

Fango’s Tony Timpone just called up from Montreal’s Fantasia film festival with a hot scoop: John Harrison, whose Clive Barker-based feature BOOK OF BLOOD is premiering at the event, is writing a four-hour miniseries based on Stephen King’s CELL. The 2006 novel sees the population of America transformed into mindless, rampaging killers by a signal sent through their cell phones.

Harrison is scripting CELL for the Weinstein Company, which had originally planned to turn the book into a theatrical feature (with Eli Roth attached at one point to direct), but decided to abandon those plans and will be shopping the project to networks instead. Having served as assistant director/composer on the King-scripted CREEPSHOW and helmed TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE MOVIE (including an adaptation of the author’s “Cat from Hell”), Harrison considers CELL one of King’s best recent books, with opening chapters that will make an incredible first 30 minutes on screen. The filmmaker adds that he doesn’t see this as a zombie story so much as a VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED-esque chiller, and enjoys the fact that the infected populace possesses a hive mentality. While he has been officially contracted to direct, he would certainly like to. BOOK OF BLOOD screens at Fantasia tonight at 7 p.m. (the show is almost sold out as of now); look for exclusive video of Harrison discussing BOOK, CELL and other projects at this site tomorrow!

King and Jackson

King on Jackson:

EW columnist Stephen King writes, “It’s worth noting that he was never convicted of anything in criminal court, and when I asked Mick—who hung out with Michael occasionally— he was emphatic in his belief that Michael Jackson was indeed innocent of the abuse allegations. In the court of public opinion, however, he was found guilty of Weirdness in the First Degree, and ended up secluded in one haunted castle after another. Finally, he died in one. Strange man. Lost man. And not unique in his passing. Like James Dean, Elvis Presley, Kurt Cobain, Heath Ledger, and a dozen others we could name, he just left the building far too soon. Because, man oh man, that guy could dance.”

This was posted on King's board yesterday so act fast if you want to go.

I've heard back from Scribner regarding the TimesTalk appearance. There will be a total of 350 tickets available but they have already sold over 200 so if you're considering this event, you may want to act quickly. They are on a first come, first served basis but they feel that all seats have excellent sight lines and that the theater is small enough to give an intimate feel.

The ticket price is not including the purchase of a book and nothing has been set in stone yet about there being signed copies available at this event.

Here is King's comment on the two Bram Stoker Awards he won:

I'm delighted to tell you that I won not one but TWO Stoker Awards at this year's ceremony, one for Duma Key (Best Novel) and one for Just After Sunset (Best Collection). My motto is, You can never be too thin, too rich, or win too many Stoker Awards. (If you've never seen one, the awards are most excellently cool.) My thanks to everyone who voted, and my congratulations to all the other nominees. Most of all, though, thanks to everyone who bought those books and enjoyed them. (And if you bought them and didn't enjoy them, I still thank you.)

Slaid Cleaves has always leaned a little toward the dark side in his literate folk narratives, so it comes as no surprise that his No. 1 fan is pop literature’s prince of darkness, Stephen King.

The scary scribe even contributed liner notes to the singer-songwriter’s latest, ominously titled collection of songs, "Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away.”
