'You like it darker? Fine, so do I', writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life - both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to read. King writes to feel 'the exhilaration of leaving ordinary day-to-day life behind', and in You Like it Darker, readers will feel that exhilaration too, again and again.
'Two Talented Bastids' explores the long-hidden secret of how the eponymous gentlemen got their skills. In 'Danny Coughlin's Bad Dream', a brief and unprecedented psychic flash upends dozens of lives, Danny's most catastrophically. In 'Rattlesnakes', a sequel to Cujo, a grieving widower travels to Florida for respite and instead receives an unexpected inheritance - with major strings attached. In 'The Dreamers', a taciturn Vietnam vet answers a job ad and learns that there are some corners of the universe best left unexplored. 'The Answer Man' asks if prescience is good luck or bad and reminds us that a life marked by unbearable tragedy can still be meaningful.
King's ability to surprise, amaze, and bring us both terror and solace remains unsurpassed. Each of these stories holds its own thrills, joys, and mysteries; each feels iconic. You like it darker? You got it.
Simon Kinberg provided an update on the upcoming Running Man remake.
“[Wright is] one of my favorite directors of all time and one of my favorite people, just a super great guy,” Kinberg said. “Obviously a cinephile. We are working on it actively. He’s actively working on the script with Michael Bacall. And our hope would be that it is a movie that, again, all fingers crossed and luck and everything else go our way, that Edgar could maybe direct next year.”
“Well, what’s cool is that Edgar, completely separately, before myself and Paramount started down the journey of figuring out how to get the remake rights, which was complicated, he had tweeted, just on his own — and I follow him obviously on every possible platform — he had tweeted that if there was one movie he would remake ever, it was Running Man.”
Welcome To Derry has been pushed to 2025.
We had had [Welcome To Derry] scheduled for Halloween ’24 but it will likely [be] pushing into ’25,” HBO CEO Casey Bloys officially announced.
Yesterday we learned (again) that the remake of Salem’s Lot will end up on MAX and now King has commented on it on X. Could it mean something is about to happen? I have no idea but it would be nice if they could just release it.
Did King’s German publisher Heyne jump the gun on announcing King’s next book? Well, they did announce it. The release date is June 12 next year and the title is You Like It Darker. They even have a cover already…
Hopefully the US and UK announcements will follow and maybe then we’ll know what stories will be included.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan and Jacob Tremblay have joined the cast of The Life of Chuck which went into production in Alabama under an interim agreement earlier this month.
Rob Savage who butchered The Boogeyman wants to do the same…a remake of The Langoliers. Here is what he said about it while speaking with ComicBook.com.
“There’s a bit of naughtiness when it comes to the rights, but I think hopefully we’ll be able to sort it out. We’ve got such a great idea for developing that one out from the short story. Of all the ones in King’s work that have been adapted, I don’t think it’s ever been done justice to. It plays with ideas that I’ve never seen explored in a horror movie. The idea of time, and decaying time, and these creatures that are eating the time left behind — there’s such a great, cosmic horror movie to be made there that lends itself so well to film. Film is all about stretching and compressing time, and you can do so many great, playful things in that space that go beyond what’s there in the novella. I’m so excited about that one. I think that one stands a good shot of happening.“
Gulf Coast Media reports that Mike Flanagan will shoot The Life of Chuck in various locations around Baldwin and Mobile contries starting October 16.
The Alabama Gulf Coast has been the backdrop of many movies big and small, but there’s no better way to welcome the spooky Halloween season than with a Stephen King movie.
Gulf Coast Media confirmed today that filmmaker Mike Flanagan will shoot his third Stephen King adaptation, “The Life of Chuck,” in various locations around Baldwin and Mobile counties. The production is anticipated to begin filming Oct. 16 and run for approximately four weeks.
According to the local booking agency, 1,000 extras are needed for the film in a range of ages from 11 years old and up. The bulk of the extras are needed for two large crowd scenes to be filmed in Baldwin County.
Here are my thoughts on the upcoming prequel to Pet Sematary, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. Pet Sematary: Bloodlines isn’t a movie I’ll be watching again but compared to my expectations and the remake of Pet Sematary that it’s supposed to be a prequel to, it's a masterpiece. Draw your own conclusions from that…
The success of my book STEPHEN KING: NOT JUST HORROR continues. The Greek publisher Klidarithmos (which has already published my book Shining in the Dark in Greek) will publish the book during next year.
I visited Richard Sheppard on his podcast The Constant Reader Podcast and talked about Stephen King, my site and a lot of other stuff. Check it out here.
Today King’s 88th book, Holly is released. Check out my review of it here but be warned, there are some spoilers in it so if you want to read it totally unspoiled, read the book and then come back for the review.
Holly gets involved with this when she is hired by Bonnie’s mother who wants Holly to find her daughter. Or at least find out what happened to her. Of course Holly solves the mystery but not without getting in rather big trouble herself.
The filming of The Life of Chuck is all set to begin in Alabama in October. The production received a waiver from SAG-AFTRA to proceed with the casting for the film. However, since it hasn’t obtained an exemption from the union to move forward with the lensing, the shoot in Alabama can be affected by the ongoing actors’ strike. The Life of Chuck is helmed by Mike Flanagan, who also penned the script before the ongoing WGA strike and stars Tom Hiddleston in the titular role and Mark Hamill as Albie.
New prequel to Pet Sematary, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines will premier at Fantastic Fest September 21 - 28, 2023.
PET SEMATARY: BLOODLINES
USA, Canada, 2023
World Premiere, 87 min
Director – Lindsey Anderson Beer
In 1969, a young Jud Crandall and his childhood friends band together to confront an ancient evil that has gripped their hometown. PET SEMATARY: BLOODLINES is a terrifying prequel based on chapters from Stephen King's novel "Pet Sematary."
Flanagan said it’s a relatively small film and that film production may begin soon despite the strike due to circumstances that mean the project does not violate WGA and SAG rules. Studios like A24 have already signed agreements which allow them to produce films without any obstacles.
Mike Flanagan has given an update on his adaptation of The Dark Tower.
"I feel really good about where we are. Oddly, where we are at the moment is completely frozen, because of the strike, but we had a wonderful spring with it and we're making enormous progress on it. And I have every reason to believe that on the other side of the strike, it's gonna be priority #1.
We have great partners on it that I can't talk about, and we've got some really exciting actors circling on it that I can't talk about, and we have some potentially groundbreaking approaches to the filmmaking of it that I just can't really talk about ... but what I can say is that my fears that any momentum we had developed was gonna be obliterated [by the strike], well, I don't really worry about that.
We’re in a healthy place. We are of course in solidarity with the WGA and SAG, and once those immediate needs are taken care of and everyone's back to work, I think that's when we're gonna immediately deploy. But it's going very well."
