Follow-ups on the goals for 2012

OK, 2012 is almost over and about a year ago I set up six goals for Lilja’s Library for 2012 and I thought it was about time to see if I lived up to them. So, here we go.

Goal 1) I hope to do at least 5 cool interviews for you. Don’t know who yet but I have my sight set on some specific people…

Outcome: I did seven interviews during 2012.

Goal 2) I hope to have at least 7 new cool contests for you during 2012.

Outcome: 11 contests where held during 2012.

Goal 3) I hope to get at least 15,000 followers on facebook. I know it’s a lot (twice what I have today) but you have to set your sights high, right?

Outcome: As predicted it was a hard goal to reach. Today I have 13,670 followers so this goal was not reached.

Goal 4) I hope to get 3,000 followers on twitter. Might be harder than goal 3.

Outcome: This goal was, as predicted, even harder then goal 4 and today there are only 2,789 so this goal wasn’t reached either.

Goal 5) I will keep reporting the latest on King for you and hopefully deliver what you want when you want it.

Outcome: I think I did a good job but this one is really up to you to say…

Goal 6) Finally get the new section at Lilja’s Library up and running. I can’t say what it is yet but it has to do with movie props…

Outcome: Marv’s Museum is now online and if I may say so myself, it looks pretty cool!

CBS Exec: Stephen King's 'Under The Dome' A New Media Experiment For The Network

At a HRTS newsmakers luncheon, Scott Koondel said the ambitious summer series will serve as a test of how to capitalize on new electronic platforms.

When CBS ordered the 13 episode series Under The Dome, based on a novel by Stephen King and produced by Steven Spielberg, it wasn’t just an investment in their most ambitious scripted summer programming in years.

Syfy Reschedules Haven Season 3 Finale

The airing of last Friday’s episode of Haven was delayed due to the recent tragedy in Connecticut. The season finale was originally scheduled to air this Friday, but Syfy has pushed the release to January and will air both episodes back-to-back:

“Last Friday’s 10PM episode of Haven contained scenes of fictitious violence in a high school setting and in light of the recent tragedy, we have decided to reschedule it along with the series’ season three finale, originally slated to air this Friday, December 21st at 10PM. The final two episodes of season three of Haven will now air back-to-back on Thursday, January 17th from 8-10 PM (ET/PT) to maintain the integrity of the series’ serialized nature.”

He talked about his crime novel Joyland (out in paperback in July) and Doctor Sleep (a sequel to The Shining out in September). King also read a "world premier" story called Afterlife.

"This is a big book, with lots in it. And I loved certain parts of the book for the film more than Stephen did.

"We're friends, and I had a lot of fun working on the script, but we were too apart on what we felt should be and what should be out of the script.

"I had an option and I let it go. But I hope it's moving forward, I really want to see that movie."

Stephen King Shares Views on Craft, Career with Students and Public

When: Friday, Dec. 7, 7:30 p.m.

What: Legendary author Stephen King will speak to more than 3,000 UMass Lowell students, faculty and members of the public in a rare appearance. At “A Conversation with Stephen King” the writer will talk with fellow bestselling author Andre Dubus III, a UMass Lowell English professor, about his craft and career and will offer advice to fledgling writers. King will read from his work and answer questions from the audience. The event marks the debut of the new UMass Lowell Chancellor’s Speaker Series. Ticket proceeds will go to a new scholarship fund for UMass Lowell students being endowed by King and his wife, Tabitha. At the end of the program, the two armchairs in which King and Dubus will sit during their conversation will be autographed by King and raffled off to raise additional funds for scholarships. The program is co-sponsored by the English Department. In addition to the evening event, King will present a special master class for UMass Lowell creative writing majors earlier in the day. Media interested in covering these events should contact UMass Lowell media relations for details.

Dolores Claiborne' debut in 'restrained' Opera season

The San Francisco Opera, still laboring to emerge from financial challenges, has announced what General Director David Gockley called a "fiscally restrained" schedule for its 2013-14 season.

The eight-production season, which runs from Sept. 6 through July 13, 2014, will include the world premiere of the previously announced "Dolores Claiborne," commissioned from composer Tobias Picker and librettist J.D. McClatchy, and the company premiere of Jerome Kern's "Show Boat." But the remainder of the season is devoted to familiar works of the Italian and German repertoire.

King recently spoke in a conference call ahead of a Dec. 7 appearance at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell’s Tsongas Center about the engine that drives much of his most famous work – fear – and how frightening characters or events in fiction can provide a counter to real-life terrors that may seem beyond control.

The Walking Dead actor to star in King's Mercy

"The Walking Dead" actor Chandler Riggs and Super 8's Joel Courtney will star in the Stephen King adaptation Mercy, according to Heat Vision.

Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, the short story "Gramma" was written by Stephen King for his 1985 short story anthology "Skeleton Crew."

Previously adapted for the small screen as an episode of "The New Twilight Zone" (written by Harlan Ellison), Mercy follows two young boys on a visit to the hospital where they learn that their dying grandmother is a witch and that her powers are fueled by a pact with the Ancient Ones.

Frances O'Connor is playing the mother.

Peter Cornwell will direct the horror thriller, to be released by Universal Pictures. Jason Blum and Wonderland's McG and Mary Viola are producing. Matt Greenberg wrote the script.

Although King is most identified with the smalltown Maine environs of Bangor, the 65-year-old father of three boasts more film and TV credits than some of Hollywood’s most seasoned players. Ever since his first novel, Carrie, made the transition from best-seller to horror classic in 1976, King’s work has become go-to fodder for a wide range of filmmakers including Stanley Kubrick (1980’s The Shining), Rob Reiner (1986’s Stand by Me) and Frank Darabont (1994’s The Shawshank Redemption) as well as such TV networks as ABC (1994 miniseries The Stand) and Syfy (Haven, recently renewed for a fourth season). “His appeal has a lot to do with his absolute love for writing, and writing across so many different genres,” says King’s agent of 30 years, Paradigm’s Rand Holston. Although Warner Bros. and Universal passed on King’s Dark Tower series for budgetary reasons, the author has more than a dozen other properties in various stages of development and production, including the John Cusack vehicle Cell and The Breathing Method, with Paranormal Activity producer Jason Blum attached. NECA continue their domination of the horror plastics universe with two new action figures from the upcoming Carrie remake (releasing March 15, 2013) with Chloë Grace Moretz (Hit Girl) in the title role. The 7-inch figure duo make up a sort of before and after...one depicting the moment just before being crowned Prom Queen...and one right after, drenched in pig's blood and gearing up TO tear some students apart with her freaky mind powers. The latter is sure to be a sought after piece for horror fans...unless they are King/De Palma purists, in which case they can sit there with their frowny faces and leave the plastics for the rest of us. The pair are said to drop (individually) late January. That's late Feb/early March for those in the US.

I like the "after" one but not the "before"...




Under the Dome on CBS

Under the Dome will be a 13 episode miniseries airing next summer.

CBS has ordered 13 episodes of a serialized television adaptation of Stephen King‘s Under the Dome. Coming next summer, the series will be produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television and CBS Television studios.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo director Niels Arden Oplev will direct the first episode. The scriptwriting team for the project included Neal Baer, Stephen King, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Stacey Snider and Brian K. Vaughan; they will all work as executive producers on the project. Simon & Schuster (part of the CBS corporation) will re-release of the trade paperback and eBook through the Pocket Books imprint.

As a lot of you probably have noticed there has been quite a lot of Walking Dead news on the Lilja's Library twitter feed. The reason for this is that I have used the same twitter account for both Lilja's Library and The Walking Dead News.

However, The Walking Dead News keeps growing each day (some days it even has more visitors than Lilja’s Library) and more and more people are finding it, enjoying it and returning to it, which is fun. Because of this though I’m doing some changes. This is the first of them.

In order to separate the news I have created a new twitter account just for The Walking Dead News and you can follow it at @TWDNs. For the time being the Walking Dead news will be posted in both twitter accounts but the plan is to eventually separate the two. My hope is off course that you will be following both accounts but if you only like one of them you will soon be able to just get the news you want.

Any help with spreading the @TWDNs account is appreciated!

Ghost Brothers out on CD/DVD in March

It's taken 13 years, thousands of hours and countless rewrites, but Stephen King and John Mellencamp's musical Ghost Brothers of Darkland County is beginning to take its final shape. A version of the show ran in Atlanta earlier this year, and a CD/DVD deluxe edition, featuring the soundtrack, handwritten lyrics and a mini-documentary about the making of the musical, is hitting shelves on March 19th. The soundtrack features guest singers Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Taj Mahal, Kris Kristofferson and Mellencamp himself.

I’ve been a little coy about what I’m working on, but it’s time to announce my third book. The Dark Tower Companion will be published by New American Library (Penguin) in April. This massive companion is 50% longer than The Road to the Dark Tower. It covers not only the eight books of King’s series, but also the Marvel graphic novel adaptations. I interviewed King for the book, along with Robin Furth, Richard Isanove (colorist), Peter David (script), Jae Lee (artist) and most of the subsequent artists. I also, much to my great delight, got to talk with Ron Howard and Akiva Goldsman about how they plan to adapt the series. Tom Holland talks The Ten O'Clock People

Dread Central talked to Tom Holland about The Ten O'Clock People and here is what he said:

Additionally, Holland will again collaborate with Stephen King to bring the short story "The Ten O'Clock People" to the big screen. "They're in negotiations right now with the cast," Holland said. "We've got Rachel Nichols for the heroine, but we're in negotiations for the male lead. We're hoping to be shooting by the first week in December in Providence, Rhode Island. I think everyone knows it's a Stephen King short story, I'm very excited about it."

Asked whether it sticks close to the original story or ventures off, Holland said, "Oh, we venture off a lot."

Gramma being filmed...again

Universal Pictures is teaming with Jason Blum's red-hot Blumhouse Prods. banner on "Mercy," a fantasy-horror movie based on Stephen King's short story "Gramma," published as part of his 1985 collection "Skeleton Crew."

Peter Cornwell ("The Haunting in Connecticut") will direct from a script by Matt Greenberg ("1408"), and Frances O'Connor ("A.I.") is set to star.

The Breathing Method Heads to the Screen

Following the success of Sinister at the box office, Deadline is reporting that producer Jason Blum is re-teaming with writer/director Scott Derrickson for The Breathing Method, an adaptation of the Stephen King novella. Originally published as part of 1982 anthology "Different Seasons," The Breathing Method is officially described as follow:

This takes place in an exclusive gentlemen's club in New York, where no one pays any dues. Membership is based upon a telling of tales, and one nightmarish tale about a disgraced woman determined to give birth--no matter the consequences.
