It seems there is a remake of Children of the Corn in the making...

Some weird, weird, weird news came in this morning that caught me a little off guard. What we received was word that a remake of Children of the Corn is gearing up for production this August in Eastern Central Iowa - and Dimension Films is not involved. Inside you'll find out who is writing, directing and also check out an early shooting synopsis!

Update: The remake is being produced by Anchor Bay Entertainment for a Sci-Fi Channel premiere.

Here's the shocker, Bloody-Disgusting learned that Donald P. Borchers - producer of the original 1984 film - is directing the latest incarnation if CHILDREN OF THE CORN from his own screenplay!

His previous directing credits include Perfect Fit (1999) and Grave Secrets (1989). He also associate produced The Beastmaster (1984).

The film is currently casting with the following synopsis making the rounds: Former Vietnam vet BURT's marriage to former prom queen VICKY is on the rocks, but Burt hopes to rekindle their old flame with a second honeymoon driving trip. Unfortunately, their journey takes them into the heart of darkness - a seemingly deserted rural community that conceals a grim secret among its rows of tall corn...

It was also revealed that this will be a period piece set in the 1970s.

According to Scribner, Stephen King provides new commentary and introductions to 5 of his favorite short stories that have been turned into films. The 400 page paperback book will be released on January 27, 2009.

Yesterday Marvel announced their new King project and it didn’t come as a big surprise that it’s The Stand that’s getting adapted. The comic will be edited by Bill Rosemann who also brings with him an impressive pool of talent to produce this top notch adaptation. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa handles scripting duties while Mike Perkins draws, inks and provides variant covers. Colorist Laura Martin, letterer Chris Eliopolus and cover artist Lee Berjemo round out this creative juggernaut.

Dolan's Cadillac on the move

Shooting has begun on Dolan's Cadillac:

Shooting began earlier this week on Dolan's Cadillac in Regina and Moose Jaw, Canada. Based on the story by Stephen King, the cast includes Christian Slater, Wes Bentley and Emmanuelle Vaugier.

Contrary to an initial report that Erik Canuel at the wheel of this psychological thriller, director Jeff Beesley is now directing from a script by Richard Dooling.

"The audience is in for a treat," says executive producer Kevin DeWalt. "We've assembled an incredibly talented cast and a highly skilled crew and are ready to deliver a quality film that will exceed audience expectations." Ellen Wander, executive producer, adds, "The transition from page to screen will not disappoint. This story is one of vengeance, Stephen King style."

Here's an official synopsis provided to Shock by production entity Minds Eye Entertainment: Tom Robinson (Wes Bentley) is a peaceful, law-abiding schoolteacher until his wife Elizabeth (Emmanuelle Vaugier) accidentally witnesses a murder. Jimmy Dolan (Christian Slater), Las Vegas¹ most ruthless and untouchable mob boss, never leaves behind a witness. Haunted by the ghost of his wife, Robinson transforms himself into an obsessed vengeance machine, pushing himself beyond the breaking point of mind, body and spirit. When the two men finally meet deep in the heart of the desert, Dolan's Cadillac climaxes with an amazing test of wills the ultimate duel. The Cadillac, which has been Dolan's armor, may just as easily become his tomb.

Th ultra-rare King story The Old Dude's Ticker is being reprinted in The BIG Book of NECON edited by Bob Booth, from CD.

There are four different editions of this title; one for every level of reader and collector, but the print runs for the signed editions are VERY small and the available copies will not last long! aND, Yes, king is signing certain editions.

Stephen King: Filming soon at a northern Michigan location near you

Just a month after Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed the new film incentive law aimed at luring Hollywood to Michigan, a movie production company is scouting locations here for the next Stephen King movie.

Rick Hert, executive director of the West Michigan Tourist Association, confirmed Tuesday that he is assisting the State Film Office in finding a remote “time kissed” cabin on a lake, surrounded by tall trees, for King’s characteristic mayhem to be filmed. Hert put the word out to area realtors and the Leelanau Chamber of Commerce and was deluged with replies.

“We had just an outpouring of location offers,” Hert said. “I sent four locations that we think are strong, one that is very strong, back to the State Film Office and now we’re just waiting to hear back from the production company.”

Todd Stachnik said he submitted his family's Leelanau County cottage as a possible location because, “it would bring great publicity to the place and would help our community at large,” but hasn’t heard back.

The production does still have a hush-hush quality about it. When asked whether or not the leading location was in Grand Traverse, Leelanau, or Benzie County, Hert would only say, “Perhaps.”

Hert would say that the King work that was being made into a movie is his 1998 novel, “Bag of Bones.” The plot centers around a novelist with writer’s block who moves into his summer house, oddly named “Sara Laughs,” and is besieged by ghosts.

Gov. Granholm signed the film incentive package, which her office says is the most “aggressive” in the nation, into law April 7. Specifically, the new law provides a 40-percent refundable or transferable tax credit for producing films in Michigan, with an added 2 percent rebate for films produced in core communities.

The new law also provides a 25 percent tax credit for film and digital media infrastructure investments for such activities as building studios or purchasing equipment.

Maine fundraiser postponed after King's remarks on military

A Bangor fundraiser featuring three best-selling novelists for Senate candidate Tom Allen has been postponed in the aftermath of a controversy surrounding Stephen King's remarks about literacy and the military.

King, who was scheduled to appear June 7 with John Grisham and Tess Gerritsen, expressed fear Monday that what was meant to be a literary event could have become all too political.

King took flak for comments he made to students on April 4 at the Library of Congress while stressing the importance for job seekers of being able to read. "If you don't," he said, "then you've got the Army, Iraq, I don't know, something like that."

In a statement relayed Monday by the Allen campaign, King said he doesn't want to be a distraction. Said King: "Since that might be the case now, it's best to do this event later, but it's just too good not to do it at all."

Allen spokeswoman Carol Andrews said people who bought tickets to the $25-a-person fundraiser can contact the campaign for a refund.

Allen, a sixth-term Democratic congressman, is challenging Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

Ghost Brothers postponed

King-Mellencamp musical postponed in Atlanta

ATLANTA (AP) — A musical by John Mellencamp and Stephen King, scheduled to be produced next season in Atlanta, has been postponed, the Alliance Theatre announced Monday.
The Alliance announced in February that "Ghost Brothers of Darkland County," with music by Mellencamp and a book by horror master King, would open in April 2009, with the object of preparing it for a Broadway run.

The Alliance notified subscribers on Monday that the project has been delayed because of "unanticipated scheduling problems which could not be resolved in time for the production."

Members of the creative team "realized the script would not be ready by spring 2009," the statement said.

In the February announcement, the Alliance described the play as "a sultry Southern gothic mystery with a blues-tinged, guitar-driven score." Peter Askin was announced as the director.
The story is set in the fictional town of Lake Belle Reve, Miss., and centers on the deaths in 1957 of two brothers and a young girl and the legend that grows out of the tragedy.

The Alliance said it now hopes to produce the show during its 2009-2010 season.

Here are more info about Under the Dome:

According to King at his reading on Book TV on C-SPAN 2 (taped back on the same day as the 3 Kings event), the long novel he's working on is... Under the Dome!

He said something along the lines of "I tried to write this 25 years ago...The idea stuck with me..." He again called it a very long novel. He then read the first few pages, about a woman getting a flying lesson and an old woodchuck walking along a road. The reading will be aired again on Saturday, May 17, at 8:00 AM if anyone is interested.

Here is what Rocky Wood wrote in SKUU about this manuscript:

The Cannibals is a novel of about 450 pages, rewritten in July to December 1981. Douglas Winter quotes King as saying that after writing It: "I worked on a book called The Cannibals ­ I had started it five years before, but it was called Under the Dome then. It didn' get finished either time."

The revision was written during the filming of Creepshow: I've gotten about four-hundred-and-fifty pages done and it is all about these people who are trapped in an apartment building. Worst thing I could think of. And I thought, wouldn't it be funny if they all ended up eating each other? It's very, very bizarre because it's all on one note. And who knows whether it will be published or not.'

In my interview with King earlier this year he talked about “a really long book” and this Sunday during the CSPAN2 airing of Writing Discussion with Stephen, Tabitha, and Owen King he revealed more about it.

In 1983, Stephen King began a book first titled “The Cannibals” which was also known as “Under the Dome”. This book remained unpublished and unfinished. According to Stephen King who appeared on CSPAN2 this evening on the program, “A writing Discussion with Stephen, Tabitha, and Owen King”, the book has come back to life. He read an excerpt from what promises to be a very long novel entitled “Under the Dome”. No publishing date was discussed. It looks like Stephen King is digging into his trunk of long abandoned novels and updating them like he did with Blaze. The short passage that King read dealt with the unexpected death of a small plane pilot and student. In recent interviews, Stephen King has mentioned that he is working on a very long book set in Maine. Stay posted for more updates…

Christian Slater and Wes Bentley are set to headline and Emmanuelle Vaugier will play the female lead in an adaptation of Stephen King's short story "Dolan's Cadillac," Film Bridge International said Thursday.

"Dolan's Cadillac" is a thriller about a man (Bentley), who plots to avenge the murder of his wife (Vaugier) by notorious and untouchable Las Vegas mob boss Jimmy Dolan (Slater).

Erik Canuel is directing "Dolan's Cadillac" from an adaptation written by Richard Dooling. Production is scheduled to begin May 14.

Film Bridge is overseeing the financing and handling worldwide distribution.

Slater ("Bobby") is repped by CAA. Bentley ("Ghost Rider") is repped by WMA and Untitled Entertainment. Vaugier ("Saw IV") is repped by APA and Evolution Entertainment.

Garris on Bag of Bones

Mick Garris discusses Bag of Bones with Fangoria:

Garris will direct, and executive-produce with Mark Sennett (who served in a similar capacity on Garris’ ABC version of King’s DESPERATION), with THE STAND’s line producer Peter McIntosh reprising those duties. The screenplay was written by Matt Venne (pronounced “vein,” by the way).

“What appeals to me about King in general and BAG OF BONES in particular is how human it is,” Garris continues. “The recent King stuff is very adult and very passionate, which I really respond to. I just love the idea of doing a grown-up ghost story.”
