The NYCC crowd got an exclusive first look at Carrie‘s teaser trailer, which begins with a helicopter shot showing the school gym on fire, but then shows a trail of destruction leading throughout Carrie‘s small town…ending with a close-up on a blood-covered Moretz. The teaser features a cacophony of voices talking about Carrie — including the memorable line “She wasn’t some monster. She was just a girl.” — implying, perhaps, that the remake would adhere close to the structure of King’s original novel, which was written in a pseudo-epistolary style. (Brian De Palma’s original Carrie film in the late ’70s jettisoned that structure in favor of a more straightforward linear narrative.)

“It rocks most righteously,” Stephen says of Calero’s finely-drawn adaptation. Calero’s take: “I have been a huge Stephen King fan for as long as I can remember. To be able to work on ANYTHING with him is an honor.”

CA: Yes, JOYLAND. It’s coming out in June 2013, and it’s perfect summer reading. It’s actually set partly on a beach, in the summer, so you have no excuse not to buy a copy and take it with you to the beach next summer. (I do realize that by the same reasoning you should only read FRANKENSTEIN in a castle during a lightning storm, but never mind.) We’re keeping the book under wraps until we’re closer to the publication date, so you won’t get any spoilers from me, but I’ll tell you it’s about a college student who gets a summer job working at a small-town amusement park and discovers some very strange things going on. Anyone who wants more info can find a bit on our website, www.hardcasecrime.com. I’ll tell you this: I’m a hardboiled sort of guy, but I was crying by the end of JOYLAND. Anyone who can read this book without shedding a tear shed is made of stone.

The Hollywood Reporter had this interesting news to report today:Joan Allen will star in A Good Marriage, an adaptation of a Stephen King novella.
Peter Askin, who directed the 2007 documentary about the Hollywood Blacklist and McCarthyism titled Trumbo, is on board to helm the thriller and is producing with his Reno Productions partner Will Battersby.
Production on Marriage is due to start in New York in mid-October.

The Stephen King Book Challenge
Are you up for a game? I’m thinking a tournament between all King’s books. This is how it works.
I have randomly paired the books two and two. You get to vote for the one you like the best of the two by sending me an email with the title in the subject line. There will be two (or more) pairs a day in the beginning and then one as we move on.
The winner of the two will advance to the next round where it will be put against the winner from the other pair. Then you get to vote again and the winner between these two moves up one place and so on until there’s only one book left. The Winner!
So, are you up for it? The first two pairs are up and running as we speak. Send mails to me and let the fun begin. You can vote on these two pairs until I put the next up.
