Amazon announces streaming deal for Under the Dome

Looks like Amazon will make episodes of Under the Dome available just days after the series makes its debut on TV in June.

The latest example came on Monday, when Amazon announced an unusual arrangement with CBS, the country’s most-watched television network, to carry episodes of “Under the Dome” just days after the series makes its debut on TV in June.

“This deal is yet another sign that the streaming marketplace is becoming more and more robust,” said Scott Koondel, the chief content licensing officer for CBS, a position that was created two months ago. “Advances in user-friendly technology from companies like Amazon and Netflix are a boon for premium content owners.”

Tod “Kip” Williams to direct Cell

Bloody Disgusting reports about the movie version of Cell.

Eli Roth was years ago attached to direct a big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s Cell, but ultimately passed because technology was moving too quickly. Point was, by the time he developed, filmed and released the movie, it would be “outdated.” He was right.

Either way, now out of Dimension and Weinstein Company hands, Screen Daily is reporting that Cargo Entertainment has attached Paranormal Activity 2‘s Tod “Kip” Williams to direct John Cusack, pictured, in the Stephen King adaptation. Cusack has always been attached to the project.

King and The Last House On The Left writer Adam Alleca adapted “Cell,” which “Centres on a graphic artist who struggles to reach his wife and son in the aftermath of a devastating pulse transmitted through a mobile phone network.” King’s novel is a throwback to his early apocalyptic horror novels. In a single moment, a pulse sent out through cell phones around the world turns every phone user into a crazed, murderous zombie.

Production is set to start in May.

Revised “Carrie” gets Cincinnati debut

September will be a scream at The Carnegie as Showbiz Players debuts the new, improved version of the horror musical “Carrie,” which famously came and went on Broadway in 1988.

Based on Stephen King’s bestseller about a misfit teen with a smother-mother and telekinetic powers, Showbiz’ Bunny Arszman promises it’s “newly reworked and fully re-imagined,” including being updated to today.

I got the following update about the limited Christine and Pet sematary from Club Stephen King.

I told you long ago, the publisher PS Publishing will sell for April 29 a special anniversary edition (30 years) of CHRISTINE and November 14, a special edition anniversary (30 years) Pet Sematary (Pet Sematary .

Bev Vincent has just pointed out that introduction CHRISTINE include a novel by Michael Marshall Smith, and it will be Ramsey Campbell, who will write an introduction for exclusive Pet Sematary.

Deadline reports that Aisha Hinds (Detroit 187) is the latest to be cast in Under The Dome Hinds will play Carolyn Hill, a take-no-prisoners Los Angeles entertainment attorney who is trapped in Chester’s Mill while driving through town with her partner, and their daughter, on their way to deliver their teenaged daughter to a camp for troubled youth.

Found this on The Fire Wire today.

According to the most recent PS Publishing newsletter, the UK Publisher of fine books will release two special Stephen King anniversary editions later this year.

Both Christine and Pet Sematary will get the special treatment with new wraparound covers, new two-page endpapers back and front (each one different) and full color wraparound artwork on a special slipcase. The artists will be signing the tip sheets plus a facsimile signature from the author. The print run will be small, around 300 or 400 numbered copies so.

Latest cast update:

Glee's Jolene Purdy and Nashville's Nicholas Strong have joined the cast of Under the Dome.

Purdy, who played tough-girl Ronnie in a handful of episodes of Fox's Glee, will play Dodee, a brilliant, eccentric engineer at the local radio station who uses her skills to make contact with the world outside the dome. Strong, who plays JT on the ABC freshman drama, will play Phil, a popular radio DJ and indie rock fan who's a charismatic figure with a dark secret. Both roles are series regulars.

Guns; new essay by King

Stephen has written an essay discussing his thoughts on the gun control/gun rights issue facing the U.S., available now as a Kindle Single through Amazon.com.

“I think the issue of an America awash in guns is one every citizen has to think about,” said King. “If this helps provoke constructive debate, I’ve done my job. Once I finished writing ‘Guns’ I wanted it published quickly, and Kindle Singles provided an excellent fit.”

Wilmington under the Dome

Under the Dome will start shooting in Wilmington in February:

North Carolina has scored another major television production.

The Wilmington Regional Film Commission lists “Under the Dome,” a TV series based on a novel by Stephen King, as being in pre-production in Wilmington. “Under the Dome” is a science-fiction novel about people in a Maine town who suddenly find themselves sealed off from the rest of the world under a gigantic, transparent force field. The 1,072-page book follows the townspeople living in post-apocalyptic conditions, trying to deal with the consequences of being shut off from the rest of the world.

Executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, “Under the Dome” is scheduled to begin filming in Wilmington in February and will debut on CBS on June 24. According to CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler, promos of the show will air during the Super Bowl.

Brian K. Vaughan an executive producer under the dome

Here are some new info about Under the Dome from Cleveland.com:

Brian K. Vaughan, who grew up in Rocky River and Westlake, is one of the principal writers and executive producers on "Under the Dome,'' a 13-episode summer series based on Stephen King's novel. Produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, the CBS drama will premiere at 10 p.m. Monday, June 24, on WOIO Channel 19.

The six "Under the Dome" executive producers are King, Vaughan, Neal Baer, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank and Stacey Snider. Vaughan, who penned several episodes of ABC's "Lost," wrote the adaptation. Niels Arden Oplev will direct the first episode.

In the 2013 Preview issue of Entertainment Weekly there is an interview with King about Doctor Sleep. In the interview King talks about his inspiration for the book:

“Every now and then somebody would ask, ‘Whatever happened to Danny?’ I used to joke and say, ‘He married Charlie McGee from “Firestarter”, and they had these amazing kids!’ But I did sort of wonder about it.”

And during the interview King also reveals a somewhat major spoiler about the book’s finale. Stop reading if you don't want to know!

“I had a chance to return things to the New England setting that I know, but I did go back to Colorado and looked around and said, ‘I’ve got to try to bring this back around to where the original book was.’ Everything should come home again. So there is actually a climax in-let’s put it this way-an area people will remember.”

According to Deadline, Colin Ford (Supernatural, We Bought a Zoo – Pictured Below) has been cast as Joe, “a teenager living in Chester’s Mill, a very smart kid who’s understandably freaked out when he discovers that the mysterious barrier covers the whole town — and both his parents are outside of it.”

Mr. Mercedes; new King book in 2014?

Here is something that totally passed outside of my radar until I got a question about it on facebook (thanks Hazel).

Apperentley King mentioned that he is working on a book called Mr. Mercedes. It's not supernatural, but a detective novel involving a person who drove a car into a crowd of people and then taunted the Detective who handled the case after his retirement. What started as a short story has turned into a 500 page manuscript.

On King's messageboard someone asked about it and the Moderator there said it would be at least 2014 before we see it, and that Mr. Mercedes is a working title that King isn't real happy with.

At CBS’s executive session with Nina Tassler, Tassler showed a promo video for their upcoming summer series “Under the Dome;” which is based upon Stephen King’s epic novel of the same name. Tassler said the show begins shooting in February in Wilmington, NC and it will air this summer, with promos playing during the SuperBowl.

Tassler then showed the video which featured King and screenwriter Brian K. Vaughan discussing the series, with a few clips and animatics illustrating how graphic the show might be. People and cows sliced in half by the dome landing, a plane crashing into the dome in mid-air, townspeople ransacking supermarkets and washing their bloody hammers from God knows what kinds of murder.

“At the time that it comes down, the wife of the town’s selectman is taking flying lessons and the plane hits this invisible dome,” described King. “The pilot just sees the nose of the plane crumble and parts of the plane hit the ground. The gradual realization of what this thing is should be powerful. I thought of it as a force field. TVs won’t work, electronics won’t work.”

Vaughan added another gory detail about the dome’s EMP quality. “If you get too close to it, pacemakers will explode out of your body.”

King spoke my language when he added that “Under the Dome” would deal with how long supplies last when the town of Chester’s Mill is cut off. “There’s only so much heat, only so much food. It was a chance to talk about the depletion of resources and how people behave in extraordinary circumstances.”

The plan for “Under the Dome” is to make it last even longer than the 1000 plus page book will take to read. “It’s very exciting to take the idea of the book and possibly expand it,” explained King. “That’s what TV is for. It’s an expansive medium. The novel only covers a short period of time. The idea of the TV series is not to extended it for a week, but months.”

Of course, no movie or television show is exactly like the book, and King seemed okay with Vaughan’s changes.

“I read Brian’s pilot script and thought it was terrific,” noted King. “It’s like the book in a lot of ways. It takes different directions from the book in other ways and that’s good. I think that Amblin television is the natural place for ‘Under the Dome’ to go. I always felt like [Steven] Spielberg’s view of American Life and mine are similar. We both see the extraordinary things in ordinary things and people.”

King is known most for horror, but let’s not forget that the best of King crosses genres like Stand By Me, Misery, The Shawshank Redemption and The Running Man. “‘Under the Dome’ combines action, intrigue, drama, mystery, romance, sex,” offered Vaughan. “Different characters will have different relationships with the dome. What happens to people involved, blossoming romances when they’re cut off from society. It’s going to bring out the best in some people and the worst in other people.”

Like King’s fictional New England town of Castle Rock, Chester’s Mill will become a rich place for viewers to visit each week.

“In small towns, we think we know everybody else’s business and everybody holds back,” said King. “Some of the people in ‘Under the Dome’ are pretty sick indeed. If people like the show, it won’t have to end after X number of pages. They can come back to Chester’s Mill week after week and obviously I hope that’s what will happen.”

CBS has announced its summer schedule, including the premiere date of its eagerly anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s bestselling novel Under the Dome and the return of resurrected crime procedural Unforgettable.

Dome is set in a New England town that’s abruptly sealed off from the rest of the world by a mysterious invisible force field. CBS teased up Dome for TV critics at the network’s press tour session in Pasadena on Saturday with a reel that included interviews with King and showrunner Brian K. Vaughan (Lost). “It’s really exciting to take the book and possibly expand it,” King said. “That’s what TV is for … TV is an expansive medium.” King said he’s particularly pleased to have Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment producing the show. “I’ve always wanted to work with Steven,” King said. “Our view of American life is similar … we both see the extraordinary in ordinary things and people.”

While Under the Dome doesn’t begin filming until next month, CBS looks to be very invested in it – revealing the first promo will be aired during the Super Bowl and showing us a video in which King and Vaughan spoke about the series, as they showed production art. Based on what was shown, it looks like Under the Dome is CBS’ answer to The Walking Dead, with its tale of how normal people try to cope in the wake of a bizarre crisis – here, an invisible dome that suddenly surrounds a town, cutting the residents off from everyone on the outside. As Vaughan put it, “It’s going to be bring out the best in some people and the worst in other people.” The network’s entertainment president Nina Tassler said that the first season will conclude with a major piece of plot information being revealed.

Under the Dome will premiere on Monday, June 24th at 10pm.

Ghost Brothers of Darkland County in Jan?

Simon & Schuster announced on their website that Ghost Brothers of Darkland County will be released in hardback (110 pages) on January 24, 2013. Earlier it has been March 19 so I’m not sure if this is an error or if the date has changed but what’s interesting is that we now know that the book will be in hardback and 110 pages long. I’ll keep you updated as I learn more but in the meantime, check out the official site here.

Under the Dome open production offices at EUE/Screen Gems Studios next week.

A CBS television series based on a best-selling Stephen King novel will film in Wilmington, according to local film industry sources.


"Under the Dome," a 13-episode series based on the author's 2009 book, is expected to open production offices at EUE/Screen Gems Studios next week, sources said.

The show will air this summer, according to a CBS news release.

"Under the Dome" will join NBC's "Revolution" as the second TV series to film in the Port City in 2013.

The dramas have something else in common: their characters struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic environment.

"Under the Dome" is set in a small New England town suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. The town's inhabitants must deal with dire living conditions while searching for answers about the barrier, according to the network.

"Revolution" follows a family trying to survive 15 years after all electronic equipment stops working. The NBC series, which began filming in the region in early July after filming its pilot in Georgia, took a midseason break Nov. 26. It will air new episodes again in March at 10 p.m. on Mondays.

"Under the Dome" will be produced by King and Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television. Niels Arden Oplev – director of the original Swedish version of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" – will direct the first episode.

No casting details have been announced.
