Carrie 2013

Carrie was first filmed in 1976 by Brian De Palma, then we got a sequel; The Rage: Carrie 2 in 1999 that really didn’t have anything to do with the original. In a 2002 we got a remake for TV that, if a success, would have turned into a TV series. It flopped. Now it’s once again time for Carrie to hit the big screen and you have to ask yourself; do we need another Carrie? There is the original and two failed attempts to remake it. Do we need one more? If you ask the director Kimberly Peirce, the answer is yes.

In the 2013 version Carrie is played by Chloë Grace Moretz, her mother by Julianne Moore and even before watching the film many asked themselves if Moretz was to good looking to be the outcast? I know that doesn’t matter in real life but it might make you look at the movie differently. I’m happy to say that that wasn’t a big issue. There are other issues though, a lot of them.

The biggest is that Carrie in this version seems to like her power a little too much. This version is very much a remake of the original but as I said, in this one Carrie likes her powers too much. Especially in the classic prom scene where Carrie gets a bucket of pig’s blood (how much blood did that bucket really have by the way?) dumped over her. In the original all the kids were laughing at her and she panicked and started her revenge more out of being scared than angry. Here all the kids seem as frightened and confused as Carrie and she really has no reason to hurt them. Most of them haven’t done anything to her but she still looks like she really enjoys hurting them. This time Carrie becomes evil, something she isn’t in the original and that is a big mistake!

Also, what’s this about Carrie stretching out her hands when using her power, as if she needs them to steer the powers in the right direction? It looks very silly if you ask me. And like many other movies it aims for a teenage audience. Like the scenes where the gangs try on clothes for the prom to hip music? Looks more like something from The Hunger Games or Twilight than Carrie if you ask me. Also a big mistake!

I know the people behind this movie wanted to make the ultimate Carrie movie but they fell short. There are so much that’s wrong with this movie. The only thing that’s totally right is Julianne Moore as Carrie’s mother. That is perfect casting even though it doesn’t come close to saving the movie.

So, do we need another Carrie? No we don’t!
