Haven - Season 1

Haven was promoted pretty hard as Stephen King's Haven when it aired on TV last year but those of you who know King's book The Colorado Kid knows that the book doesn't have all that much in common with the TV series. At first I was a bit put off by this but when it was a fact I dealt with it and came to like the series for what it is; a series that has the book as a backdrop to work from.

The main character in the series is FBI agent Audrey Parker who's coming to Haven to investigate a murder. During the investigation she finds an old newspaper clipping with a picture of a woman who could be Audrey herself if it wasn't for the fact that the photo was taken a long time ago. The fact that she knows fairly little about her own background gets her curious and she decide to stay in the Haven to find out more. And while she's there she helps the local police when she can. She develops a good working relationship with her temporary partner, Nathan Wuornos, and together they investigate all the strange things happening in Haven. Occasionally they also get help from Duke Crocker, a local smuggler and all-rounder, who knows a lot about the people in Haven.

The series reminds me a lot of "X-Files" in the structure even if there are no aliens here (yet), only strange things that no one can explain. There is also a greater, underlying, threat that we really don't know much about other than its evil. And in the middle of all this Audrey's also doing what she can to find more info about the woman in the newspaper article.

The casting people did a good job casting Haven. Emily Rose and Lucas Bryant works well as Audrey and Nathan and Eric Balfour are perfect as Duke. The series grows throughout its 13 episodes long first season and ends with a real cliffhanger. The DVD box adds commentaries to 12 of the 13 episodes, three making of movies, six video blogs and interviews with Emily Rose, Lucas Bryant and Eric Balfour. There's also a trailer for season one and a sneak peak at what's coming in season two.

Lilja's final words about Haven - Season 1:

Season one lays the groundwork for what has the potential to be a very good and long-running series, if done right!
