American Nightmares #5

The second arc of The Stand: American Nightmares has come to an end. It follows three of our travelers/group of travelers as they are starting to move. We get to see Nick traveling on his own, Larry also on his own after Rita has committed suicide and Stu who hocks up with Fran and Harold. All of them on the move, looking for other survivors.

We also get a first glimpse of Mother Abigail in one of Nick’s dreams. It’s only a quick glimpse but it looks like Mike has gotten her fairly right. Hopefully we’ll see more of her in the next issue.

As usual the drawings and coloring is just right. The characters look very good and the coloring sets the mode of the story perfect. The team has definitely captured the feel of the book. And even though I realize I’m starting to sound like a broken record I must tell you that The Stand is one of the best comics I have encountered. I really love this one and I can’t wait for the next story act to begin.

The bonus material in the issue is a text by Lee Bermejo (who has done the cover) in which he talks about making montages, something he used to hate…

The second thing we get is a look back at American Nightmares from Mike Perkins. Then we also get the script to final that we’re getting used to as well as a sketch version of the variant cover for this issue and a sneak peak at the variant cover for issue #1 of Sole Survivors.

Lilja's final words about American Nightmares #5:

The two forces of good and evil (Mother Abigail and Flagg) are definitely starting to form now. I can’t wait to see more of it in the next arc, Sole Survivors, that begins in October.
