Here is a report from The Dark Tower panel at Comic Con

The Special Events Hall at the 2007 New York Comic Con was filled to capacity for the Marvel Comics “Dark Tower” panel on Saturday afternoon. And the man everyone was there to see was the last to take the stage. Marvel EIC Joe Quesada moderated the panel, and introduced artist Jae Lee, Robin Furth, Peter David, Ralph Macchio, Richard Isanove and Chris Eliopoulos. Quesada then welcomed to the stage “one of the greatest creators of the last 50 years, maybe ever,” Mr. Stephen King. The vaunted novelist took the stage to thunderous applause, and a standing ovation, and a pair of Imperial Stormtroopers were forced to keep order with the mountain of photographers. “If you keep calling me Mr. King, I’m gonna kick your ass,” King warned Quesada.

The midnight release of Stephen King’s Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born #1 at nearly 150 retailers across the country is almost here and Marvel wishes all of the retailers participating the best of luck. Marvel is equally as excited as all the retailers and fans across the country and wants to wish unqualified success to every store participating.

"The response we have received from retailers participating in the midnight opening has been overwhelmingly positive. The mainstream attention it has drawn to the direct market and to this first issue is unrivaled in the recent history of the industry. Should this prove as successful as it appears it will be, I think we'll see more of this type of mainstream event happening in the future," said Marvel Senior VP of Sales David Gabriel.

The night of Tuesday, February 6th, comic stores across the United States will be opening their doors for a midnight release for the first time in comics’ history. In a landmark moment for comics, Stephen King fans and comic fans will ring in Wednesday (also known as New Comics Day to comic fans) at 12:01 to get the premiere issue of Stephen King’s Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born.

Marvel also wishes to announce that due to the tremendous popularity of the variant cover program, each issue of Stephen King’s Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born will feature a sketch cover, as chosen by Jae Lee, and an all-new variant cover by one of the top artists in the industry. Issue #2 will feature a variant cover by superstar artist David Finch (New Avengers, Moon Knight) and the sketch cover by Jae Lee seen for the first time here. Here is some indications that The Dark Tower comic will be released in other languages then English. This is from a mail sent out from King's official site:

The foreign translated version deals are being worked through now and when we have more information we will let you know in which languages and territories they will available.

Get The Dark Tower comic at midnight

Every week comic book fans look forward to Wednesdays, the day new issues go on sale. On Feb. 7, one of those comics will be the first issue of a new seven-part series based on the Stephen King novel “The Dark Tower,” from Marvel Entertainment. To commemorate the event, almost 150 comic book retailers across the country will begin selling the issue at the stroke of midnight. A list of participating stores can be found at www.marvel.com/news/comicstories. Fans who flock to Midtown Comics in Manhattan will see a couple of special guests: Peter David, who writes the dialogue for the series, and Jae Lee, the book’s artist. The store will open for one hour.

King to attend the New York Comic Con

With only about 50 days left until issue #1 of The Dark Tower comic is to be released Marvel now has an official site for the comic. One of the first news reported on the site is that King himself will attend the New York Comic Con taking place February 23-25, 2007. You can read the press release here.

Dark Tower: Gunslinger Born

Some very good news about the upcoming Dark Tower Comic where released today. It seams the title of the first set will be Dark Tower: Gunslinger Born. Here is the full report:

Panels from Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series were shown to an enthusiastic group of retailers during the conference. The full series name is "Dark Tower: Gunslinger Born" and the series will play a significant role in Marvel's new reader outreach programs. Fans worried about delays on this series shouldn't, as EiC Joe Quesada revealed Saturday during the Baltimore Comic-Con that series artist Jae Lee is already hard at work on the fifth issue of the series. The first issue ships February, 2007.

Peter David to script The Dark Tower

Marvel has selected writer Peter David to script the first seven issues of The Dark Tower Comic.

The comics will work in conjunction with the novels, further supplementing and defining the saga’s mythology under the direction of the acclaimed author himself.

Five batches of The Dark Tower comic

I talked to Robin Furth about the upcoming Dark Tower Comic and she had really interesting things to tell me about it. Among the things she told me was that the plan is that Marvel will do five batches of Dark Tower comics. The first one will be released next year and contain seven issues (later published collected in a hardcover). Of the other four batched one will contain five issues and the other three six issues. However, this may change as the comics evolve. Check back tomorrow for the full interview with Robin.

King's involvement in The Dark Tower comic

Here are some info about King's involvement in The Dark Tower comic:

King is the Executive Editor and Creative Director of Marvel's much-awaited Dark Tower comic book series and graphic fiction collections," said Diamond's press release. "King is directly involved in the creative aspects of this project, supervising all editorial and visual content. Robin Furth, author of Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower: A Concordance,' is outlining the 'Dark Tower' comic book series, providing scene-by-scene plotting, and maintaining the continuity and consistency of each story arc."

While the above implies heavy editorial involvement, many have taken note of the curious absence of King's credit as "writer" or even "scripter," as he is merely mentioned as being involved in editorial capacities. Marvel Comics has made no comment since the press release, but stay tuned to CBR News for more on this developing story.

Bad news about Marvel's Dark Tower comics. This was published on King's site today:

Marvel Dark Tower Update
Stephen and Marvel have decided to push back the launch of the Dark Tower comic books to 2007. "Given the size of the project and all the creative talent involved, I want to give the Marvel series all the room to breathe it needs and deserves," said Stephen. "I've got so much else going on in 2006 - two novels coming out, CELL and LISEY'S STORY, and the work with John Mellencamp on 'Ghost Brothers of Darkland County.' The Marvel series is going to be a blast, and I want to have the time to enjoy it."

The 1st issue of the yet-to-be-named first arc of the Dark Tower comic series will be shipping in February 2007. The last issue of this six-issue series will be shipping in July 2007. The first hardcover collection will be shipping in October 2007.

The Marvel issue is now solved. Here is a part from the press release:

The comic series will mark the first time Stephen King has produced original content for an ongoing comic book project. The series will expand the saga of King's epic hero, Roland Deschain, whose quest to save the Dark Tower is captured in seven best-selling novels published over the course of twenty-five years. King's unparalleled storytelling power will inform new stories that delve into the life and times of the young Roland, revealing the trials and conflicts that lead to the burden of destiny he must assume as a man, the last Gunslinger from a world that has moved on. The comics will work in conjunction with the novels, further supplementing and defining the saga's mythology under the direction of the acclaimed author himself.

There will be 6 issues. One issue each month starting in April 2006. The at Christmas next year all 6 parts will be released together in a hardback edition.

Horror King's graphic novel

STEPHEN KING IS writing a graphic novel for Marvel Comics. Illustrated by Jae Lee, well-known American illustrator of comic books, it will form the eighth volume in King’s Dark Tower series, published by Simon & Schuster in the States and Hodder in the UK. Marvel is distributed worldwide by Diamond Book Distributors and publication is scheduled for next autumn.

Publishers Weekly reported the following:

Publisher Weekly is also reporting that Stephen King will bring the Dark Tower series to Marvel. In a recent article, Publisher Weekly wrote:

"In a move that can only continue to elevate the literary and commercial cachet of the graphic novel format, sources say that bestselling novelist Stephen King has agreed to write a new installment of his Dark Tower series as a graphic novel to be published in 2006.

"A spokesperson for Marvel Comics, which will announce the deal on Friday, confirmed that they will publish a King work, although they didn't disclose details. Marvel was dropping hints about a possible King book at this year's Comic-con in July. Sources say that the new Dark Tower installment will be published first as a comic book periodical beginning in April and later released as a Marvel hardcover in the fall of 2006. The artist on the book will be veteran comics illustrator Jae Lee and the colorist is Richard Isanove, who won a recent Quill Award for his work on Marvel's 1602."

To add a little more proof to the fire, we went to Jae Lee, asking him if the rumors had any merit. He would not comment on the subject.

Marvel then later gave the following statement:

When asked to comment on the report, a Marvel spokesman said, "Marvel will be releasing the correct info of what 'King' is on Friday."

Marvel Comics' Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada had this to say when a fan noted that novelist Stephen King had said in a web interview he'd be doing some work for Marvel.

"Let's say, hypothetically, that we were doing business with Steven King. Would that be cool?" The crowd responded enthusiastically "Yes" and Quesada replies "Let's leave it at that, then."

It seams that in the latest Italian Spiderman comic issue, there is news about the collaboration between King and Marvel. They just said that they will give more info in a month but they confirmed that King would collaborate with Marvel. More info to come.
