Q&A Under the Dome

Here is a Q&A that Collider was invited to. They also got to see the pilot of the series.

Collider was invited, along with a number of other outlets, to preview the pilot episode and chat with executive producers Neal Baer and Brian K. Vaughan. With some cool effects, interesting twists and intriguing ideas, it’s definitely a show worth tuning into when it premieres on June 24th. During the Q&A, the two talked about what it’s like to have Stephen King and Steven Spielberg’s involvement with the show, how different the end will be from the novel, that so far each episode is the equivalent of one day, how viewers will get some answers by the end of the 13-episode first season, that there will be character deaths, and how there will continue to be some cool effects throughout the season. Check out what they had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

Here is also an updated episode listing.

Mackenzie Lintz as Norrie Calvert in Under the Dome

Mackenzie Lintz will play Norrie Calvert in Under the Dome. Here is what the official site said about it:

With all of the news about CBS’ Under the Dome, Stephen King‘s new books, and Joe Hill and Owen King‘s new works, I completely have been neglecting to announce the emergence of a new significant Under the Dome actor. Well, actually, I was aware of her presence for months now. However, I was not sure how major her role was until recently. Her name is Mackenzie Lintz. This young actor is relatively new to professional acting, since she’s, well, so young and all. However, Mackenzie has already racked some impressive credits before getting cast as Norrie on Under the Dome. These small projects include The Hunger Games, and the TV series, Drop Dead Diva. She comes from an acting family. Her sister, Madison is an actor with credits like AMC’s The Walking Dead and Parental Guidence. Her brother, Matt, is a young actor who was a recent episode of NBC’s Revolution, which films in the same town (Wilmington, North Carolina) that UTD does. She also has another brother, Macsen, who appeared in Scary Movie 5. This is definitely her first Stephen King-related project.

Under the Dome scenes include fake gun fire

Interesting article from WECT.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Crews with Under the Dome continue filming in the Wilmington area Tuesday.

Don't be alarmed if you hear gunfire near Church Street, some of the scenes could include possible fake gun fire.

According to film permits, the scene involves a character breaking into a house while another actor comes out of the home with a fake rifle to prevent the crime.

They will be working on the scene until 11:00 Tuesday night.

The locally-filmed mini-series is based on a Stephen King novel with the same title.

Under the Dome is about a fictitious town called Chester's Mill that finds itself surrounded by a mysterious barrier that won't allow people to travel outside of it.

The series will air on CBS in June.

Hill on Under the Dome

Posted: May 11, 2013, 05:50
_
Remeber my post about Joe Hill seeing the pilot of Under the Dome? Well, here is a comment on that from the people behind Under the Dome:

Well, we have received our first official review of the Under the Dome pilot…and it comes from none other than author Stephen King ‘s son, author Joe Hill. This means, A. the pilot is actually done, or at least in a fine cut at this point, B. Stephen King does not dislike it enough to not allow his son to see it, and C. Joe Hill likes to go public with nearly everything he thinks. The Under the Dome pilot does not air on CBS until June 24th, so it is not uncommon for a pilot to be finished this long before a premiere date. Pus, CBS gave an order to make Under the Dome a straight-to-series type of series. This means, that they decided to go forward with 13 episodes without even seeing a pilot. This used to never happen, especially. when shows like Michael Bay’s The Last Boat get a order and they decide to wait a full calendar year between shooting the pilot and the first regular episode. However, these days, anything is possible in television, even broadcast television. Of course, comparing it to Lost is a little unimaginative for a best-selling author, but I am sure he is not allowed to say much more. Conjuring up memories of Lost is probably what the Under the Dome producers want him to do anyway. Whatever works for ratings, I guess.

New ending and a second season ?

Posted: May 7, 2013, 09:06
_
This interesting article from zap2it asks some very interesting questions.

1. What is this new ending...
2. What happens if there is a second season?
3. If there isn't a second season, will we get a satisfying ending?

"Under the Dome" is coming to CBS this summer, the story of a small town that suddenly finds itself encased in a giant dome. Creator Brian K. Vaughn teases the outline of the show for SFX, which he says will have three distinct sections.

"The first section is fate. The second section is fear. And the third section is fascism. I won't say who is the fascist or what exactly that means, but I think you get the sense that things are going to go wrong very quickly under the dome, and we're going to need an iron fist keeping order," says Vaughn.

He also reassures fans that people who have read the book won't necessarily know exactly what's coming.

"There's sort of a perhaps slightly different explanation for the dome," says Vaughn. "I nervously pitched Stephen King what a different version of the ending might be ... He said, 'I wish I'd thought of that.'"

"Which, I suspect, is just Stephen being kind," laughs Vaughn. "But he's been great."

Neal Baer, the showrunner, adds that the series can be seen as a parable for the times we're living in.

He tells Huff Post Live, "What does it mean for your town when you start to run low on food, fuel, medicine? What happens when the dome gets a little polluted when you're burning stuff for heat? It's not a big step to think about what that means for us, running low on fuel, running low on water, what about pollution."

"We can do a show that touches on these issues -- that's why we call it a parable for our time without being preachy or pedantic."

It all leaves us wondering -- what does a Season 2 look like? That's a little cart-before-the-horse, but CBS is not running "Under the Dome" as a miniseries, meant to only air this summer.

If it is successful, the show will be renewed for a second season. We wonder what happens then -- will there be more story to tell? And if it doesn't get renewed, will Season 1 wrap up the story in a satisfying way?

"Under the Dome" premieres Monday, June 24 on CBS.

Only 49 days left...

Simpsons and Under the Dome

Simpsons in Under the Dome

Now CBS’ upcoming series adaptation of King’s Under the Dome is going to give the Fox animated hit a shout-out in return.

The backstory: King originally began work on his sprawling eco-parable bestseller in 1976, then shelved the project for a couple decades before picking it up again and ultimately publishing the novel in 2009. In the meantime, 20th Century Fox released The Simpsons Movie in 2007 with a broadly comic take on the same concept. Fox’s series The Simpsons then mocked the coincidence in a 2010 episode where Monty Burns begins to seal Springfield with a giant dome while brandishing a copy of King’s book before realizing this has already been done once before.

Now the upcoming series version of Under the Dome will throw a reference back to The Simpsons in its third episode. “We do make a reference to The Simpsons Movie,” showrunner Neal Baer told EW. “We have a ‘recharge party’ in episode 3 and the kids are watching it.”

There won’t be actual footage of the film in the scene, but it’s definitely in the script. “We make a verbal reference,” Baer teases.

Under the Dome descends on CBS on June 24.

Looks like Amazon will make episodes of Under the Dome available just days after the series makes its debut on TV in June.

The latest example came on Monday, when Amazon announced an unusual arrangement with CBS, the country’s most-watched television network, to carry episodes of “Under the Dome” just days after the series makes its debut on TV in June.

“This deal is yet another sign that the streaming marketplace is becoming more and more robust,” said Scott Koondel, the chief content licensing officer for CBS, a position that was created two months ago. “Advances in user-friendly technology from companies like Amazon and Netflix are a boon for premium content owners.”

More Under the Dome

Posted: January 13, 2013, 16:14
_
More about Under the Dome from Crave Online:

At CBS’s executive session with Nina Tassler, Tassler showed a promo video for their upcoming summer series “Under the Dome;” which is based upon Stephen King’s epic novel of the same name. Tassler said the show begins shooting in February in Wilmington, NC and it will air this summer, with promos playing during the SuperBowl.

Tassler then showed the video which featured King and screenwriter Brian K. Vaughan discussing the series, with a few clips and animatics illustrating how graphic the show might be. People and cows sliced in half by the dome landing, a plane crashing into the dome in mid-air, townspeople ransacking supermarkets and washing their bloody hammers from God knows what kinds of murder.

“At the time that it comes down, the wife of the town’s selectman is taking flying lessons and the plane hits this invisible dome,” described King. “The pilot just sees the nose of the plane crumble and parts of the plane hit the ground. The gradual realization of what this thing is should be powerful. I thought of it as a force field. TVs won’t work, electronics won’t work.”

Vaughan added another gory detail about the dome’s EMP quality. “If you get too close to it, pacemakers will explode out of your body.”

King spoke my language when he added that “Under the Dome” would deal with how long supplies last when the town of Chester’s Mill is cut off. “There’s only so much heat, only so much food. It was a chance to talk about the depletion of resources and how people behave in extraordinary circumstances.”

The plan for “Under the Dome” is to make it last even longer than the 1000 plus page book will take to read. “It’s very exciting to take the idea of the book and possibly expand it,” explained King. “That’s what TV is for. It’s an expansive medium. The novel only covers a short period of time. The idea of the TV series is not to extended it for a week, but months.”

Of course, no movie or television show is exactly like the book, and King seemed okay with Vaughan’s changes.

“I read Brian’s pilot script and thought it was terrific,” noted King. “It’s like the book in a lot of ways. It takes different directions from the book in other ways and that’s good. I think that Amblin television is the natural place for ‘Under the Dome’ to go. I always felt like [Steven] Spielberg’s view of American Life and mine are similar. We both see the extraordinary things in ordinary things and people.”

King is known most for horror, but let’s not forget that the best of King crosses genres like Stand By Me, Misery, The Shawshank Redemption and The Running Man. “‘Under the Dome’ combines action, intrigue, drama, mystery, romance, sex,” offered Vaughan. “Different characters will have different relationships with the dome. What happens to people involved, blossoming romances when they’re cut off from society. It’s going to bring out the best in some people and the worst in other people.”

Like King’s fictional New England town of Castle Rock, Chester’s Mill will become a rich place for viewers to visit each week.

“In small towns, we think we know everybody else’s business and everybody holds back,” said King. “Some of the people in ‘Under the Dome’ are pretty sick indeed. If people like the show, it won’t have to end after X number of pages. They can come back to Chester’s Mill week after week and obviously I hope that’s what will happen.”

Under the Dome to premier June 24th

Posted: January 13, 2013, 01:11
_
CBS has announced its summer schedule, including the premiere date of its eagerly anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s bestselling novel Under the Dome and the return of resurrected crime procedural Unforgettable.

Dome is set in a New England town that’s abruptly sealed off from the rest of the world by a mysterious invisible force field. CBS teased up Dome for TV critics at the network’s press tour session in Pasadena on Saturday with a reel that included interviews with King and showrunner Brian K. Vaughan (Lost). “It’s really exciting to take the book and possibly expand it,” King said. “That’s what TV is for … TV is an expansive medium.” King said he’s particularly pleased to have Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment producing the show. “I’ve always wanted to work with Steven,” King said. “Our view of American life is similar … we both see the extraordinary in ordinary things and people.”

While Under the Dome doesn’t begin filming until next month, CBS looks to be very invested in it – revealing the first promo will be aired during the Super Bowl and showing us a video in which King and Vaughan spoke about the series, as they showed production art. Based on what was shown, it looks like Under the Dome is CBS’ answer to The Walking Dead, with its tale of how normal people try to cope in the wake of a bizarre crisis – here, an invisible dome that suddenly surrounds a town, cutting the residents off from everyone on the outside. As Vaughan put it, “It’s going to be bring out the best in some people and the worst in other people.” The network’s entertainment president Nina Tassler said that the first season will conclude with a major piece of plot information being revealed.

Under the Dome will premiere on Monday, June 24th at 10pm.

Under the Dome open production offices at EUE/Screen Gems Studios next week.

A CBS television series based on a best-selling Stephen King novel will film in Wilmington, according to local film industry sources.

"Under the Dome," a 13-episode series based on the author's 2009 book, is expected to open production offices at EUE/Screen Gems Studios next week, sources said.

The show will air this summer, according to a CBS news release.

"Under the Dome" will join NBC's "Revolution" as the second TV series to film in the Port City in 2013.

The dramas have something else in common: their characters struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic environment.

"Under the Dome" is set in a small New England town suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an enormous transparent dome. The town's inhabitants must deal with dire living conditions while searching for answers about the barrier, according to the network.

"Revolution" follows a family trying to survive 15 years after all electronic equipment stops working. The NBC series, which began filming in the region in early July after filming its pilot in Georgia, took a midseason break Nov. 26. It will air new episodes again in March at 10 p.m. on Mondays.

"Under the Dome" will be produced by King and Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television. Niels Arden Oplev – director of the original Swedish version of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" – will direct the first episode.

No casting details have been announced.
